Indianapolis Plumber Installs A Greener, Cleaner Restroom
Hands-Free Restroom Can Help Combat Viruses Like The Swine Flu
Indianapolis, IN [May 27, 2009] – A hands-free restroom can help save energy and water costs while reducing the spread of germs that can be especially helpful at a time when contagious viruses are spreading quickly like the latest H1N1 flu virus (swine flu). By simply touching light switches and faucet handles, a virus may be transferred from one individual to another.
The CDC reports that on average, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized each year with flu related conditions and recommends washing your hands with soap and water frequently, especially after coughing or sneezing.
“When most people go to the bathroom to wash their hands, they will first turn on the light and then turn on the faucet, thereby potentially transferring contagious germs from their hands to the light switch and faucet handles,” noted David Heffner, a local plumber with Heffner and Associates.
Heffner has a remedy to help prevent the spread of germs on light switches and faucet handles by installing products he created for his Child Friendly BathroomTM that he developed in 2000. These products also help save energy and water. The Child Friendly BathroomTM features:
1. Motion sensor light switch with an adjustable timer. When someone enters the bathroom, the motion sensor detects their movement and turns the light on. The timer is adjustable to stay on from 30 seconds to 30 minutes. This motion sensor eliminates the need to have to turn the light on and then off again when they are done washing their hands.
2. Delta hands-free faucet. This faucet is equipped with a motion sensor that will turn the faucet on when hands are placed underneath the spout. The water will stay on for 30 seconds and then automatically shuts-off. Faucet handles are one of the major sources of germs in the bathroom which is why so many people get sick. In addition to preventing the spread of germs, this faucet also prevents scalding (a safety feature) and saves water (a conservation feature).
3. Toto toilet with a soft closing toilet seat. Toto toilets are among the best rated functioning toilets on the market today. The main concern with 1.6 gallon flushing toilets is that they become stopped up very easily. The Toto performs well and stoppages are minimal. The toilet seat is made of plastic and has hydraulic hinges that slowly close the seat and lid when they are tapped from the standing or upright position. The soft closing seat is a safety feature for small children and a convenience to all boys and men who get yelled at for not putting down the seat when they are done using the bathroom.
“I developed the Child Friendly BathroomTM for my two daughters several years ago when they were gaining their independence as toddlers,” added Heffner. “As I worked on the Child Friendly BathroomTM, I realized it would be a great benefit for any home. It can be especially useful for seniors and anyone else who wants to reduce their risk of spreading and picking up germs in their own home.”
