Mother Nature. Can't Live With Her, Can't Live Without Her

Pro Series Testimonial Letter
Before I launch into this month's newsletter, I just want to take a moment to give thanks to all of my customers, family, friends and business associates for your continued support and counsel. Profits are up considerably this year as compared to this time last year. I say this not to brag, but to share the fact that not all is bad with every sector of today's economy.
Water Heaters and Home Improvement Centers. An Ill-Advised Combination
I shop the different home improvement centers on a fairly regular basis and definitely believe that they serve a purpose in today's world. And with the current state of the economy and record unemployment in some states, people are tightening the purse strings and trying to spend less where they can. I draw the line with water heaters however. I will not name the home improvement center, but the brand of water heater that they sell is Whirlpool. The reason that these water heaters are so inexpensive is that they are (in my opinion) of the poorest quality on the market today and installed by sub-contractors. I have several Whirlpool water heater stories that I can share, but the most recent one and probably the most telling would be the following:
A customer called last year with a leaking 50 gallon gas water heater. I gave him a price to replace it and never heard back. He called a home improvement center and had a 50 gallon gas Whirlpool water heater installed and saved around $300.00 until they woke up one morning to no hot water. The customer called the home improvement center to report the problem and the response that he got was that he had to call the manufacturer directly. It took several days to have the new part shipped which meant no hot water until the water heater was repaired. I was asked to install the new part which I did with the understanding that I would not warranty the part or the installation and charge accordingly for the labor. I advised the customer that if they had any further problems, to seriously consider replacing the water heater with the brand that I install, AO Smith.
Had I done this installation, the part and the labor would have been covered under warranty and this could have been taken care of with one phone call and possibly within the same day.
You get what you pay for.
A Pledge To Help Others In 2009
This month's person/business is Scott Armstrong with Harvest Protection Company. Scott does surge protection for homes and businesses. I had Scott install surge protection in our home 7 years ago for our entire electrical system, the phone system and the satellite TV connections. Our home has had no problems with surges since Scott installed his equipment. One of my customers was so impressed with Scott's work, that he flew him down to Florida to do the same thing with their home down there.
