Old Man Winter Is Still Here!
I had a customer leave his garage door open last night by accident. The water lines to the water heater and the water softener froze, so there was no water to the entire house. Fortunately, the problem was caught in time with no damage occuring.
Please go to my web site for more information on tips and tricks in dealing with frozen pipes.
Frozen Pipes Tips And Tricks
Who needs a bailout from the federal government when Mother Nature can wreak havoc with sub-zero temperatures and record snow fall amounts?
No folks, I'm not trying to get political, but the bottom line is that bad fortune for some equates to good business for others.
Where's The Common Sense?
On Friday January 16th, Indianapolis had -30 temperatures with the wind chill. I know, I was out working in this stuff. I received a call the following Monday from a woman who is now living in Florida, but who has (had) a house for sale in Fishers. Neither the homeowner or the realtor fessed up, but the heat to the house was turned off during this severe cold snap and the water lines in the house froze and burst. A next door neighbor called the realtor when she saw water coming out from the back of the house and flowing out into the street.
The damage to the home would be what I would consider catastrophic with over 20 breaks in copper water lines throughout the house. There was even ice in the toilet tanks and bowls. Just the plumbing repairs came to almost $3000.00. There was extensive damage to drywall and the laminate floor in the kitchen was completely ruined. If the insurance adjustor is sharp and can prove that the furance was intentionally turned off, this claim may be denied, saddling the homeowner with the entire cost of the repairs.
The moral to this story... had the water to the house been turned off and the house properly winterized, this would have never happened.
I have said this before and will repeat myself hundreds of times in the years to come. If you travel and are leaving the house empty, turn the water off to the house. Or if you have a house that is for sale/rent that is vacant, turn the water off and winterize the plumbing system.
A Pledge To Help Others In 2009
The economic news continues to get worse. I have several customers and friends that have lost jobs and my own brother who worked for Merrill Lynch for 18 years lost his job last month.
In last month's newsletter, I made a pledge to spotlight businesses and organizations that I have a personal involvement with. This month's person/business is Joel Hall from Sign-A-Rama. Joel and his wife Mary own Sign-A-Rama stores in Carmel and Fishers and can take care of all of your sign needs. Need a truck wrapped? Sign-A-Rama replaced the shower graphic on my van and did a great job. For more information, please call Joel or Mary at 317-575-1805 or you can visit their web site at
