Heffner Plumbing

 February, 2010
No smoke and mirrors here folks. Water savings of 10,000 gallons per year or more can be achieved with the installation of dual flush toilets.

What is a dual flush toilet? Excellent question and something that I really didn't know much about until last year. Essentially the dual flush toilet has one flush for liquid waste and another flush for solid waste. The liquid waste flush uses less water, hence the water savings that are incurred.

Indianapolis Winnelson (parts supplier and Heffner Plumbing sponsor) and Ashworth-Train and Associates (manufacturer's representative for Toto) supplied me with a Toto Aquia Dual Flush toilet to install in my own home for test purposes.

The Toto Aquia Dual Flush Toilet

The Aquia does not look like a standard toilet and certainly does not perform like one. The sleek design and skirted bowl are the first two features that caught my eye. The lack of the conventional toilet handle was the next thing that I noticed, replaced with push buttons on the top of the tank lid. The smaller button on the left is for liquid flushes, using .9 gallons of water per flush. The larger button is for the full flush, utilizing the full 1.6 gallons of water in the tank.

The toilet bowl itself is very deep with a small water spot. The size of the water spot was a concern for obvious reasons, but I have been pleasantly surprised by the powerful flush and the scouring action of the water thereof.

My family and I have been very happy with this new toilet and are glad to have made the switch. We will be tracking our water usage and will hopefully have an update in the next few months. My wife's only comment was "We are the only family I know of where we have to explain to our guests how to use the bathroom fixtures!"

White Vinegar Is Not Just For Cooking

I had a customer tell me that in the 40 years that she had lived in her home, she had never had a clogged drain. I asked her how she had done this and she said "Equal parts of baking soda and white vinegar."

I've shared this home remedy with customers over the years. Baking soda first and then the white vinegar. Do this at night before you go to bed so the baking soda and vinegar have time to work. The same can be done with your garbage disposal to keep it smelling fresh and clean.

White vinegar can also be used to dissolve hard water deposits around faucets. And if your faucet aerator is spraying in 10 different directions, pour white vinegar into a baggy and place this over the end of the faucet and hold it in place with a rubber band. Do the same for showerheads. In both cases, let these soak overnight for the best results.

Note:  Using baking and soda and white vinegar is no guarantee that you will never have a clogged drain, but it does help in most cases.
