 4th of July

I hope that you had a safe and restful 4th of July weekend. Monday morning brings home the reality that the holiday weekend is over and it is time to get back to work (unless you are a business owner who sends out newsletters on Sunday nights). Regardless, let's roll our sleeves up and get back at it.

Water Pressure That Is Too High Can Be A Problem

Most people that I know love to have the kind of water pressure that will knock you over in the shower when you turn the water on. Having "good" water pressure is nice, but if it is too high, bad things start to happen. Case in point:

A relatively new customer recently e-mailed me with a problem with his hose bibbs spraying water everytime that he and his wife go to turn them off. There is a specific brand of hose bibb that is notorious for this and I thought that this was the problem. The bottom line is, the problem wasn't the hose bibbs at all. The water pressure coming into the house was too high. The pressure has been this way since the house was built and this customer is currently on his 3rd water heater in 10 years!

Water pressure is not suppose to exceed 80 Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI). The customer with the spraying hose bibbs had water pressure in excess of 100 PSI. This was is Avon. My old accountant lives in Plainfield and I just recently discovered that his water pressure is also over 100 PSI.

The solution to all of this is a device called a pressure reducing valve. This device will reduce the water pressure down to under 80 PSI.

June Rains Prove To Be A Busy Time For Sump Pumps And Back-up Systems

The most important lesson that I learned last month while dealing with all of the calls for sump pumps and back-up systems was to check the fluid level in your back-up batteries. If the fluid level is low, the battery will not hold or sustain its normal charge. You MUST use distilled water when topping off the battery cells.

Deep cycle marine batteries can have a varied life cycle, but don't expect much past 5 years.
Sincerely,

David Heffner
