I can remember as a young boy how I would drink water from a garden hose and not think anything of it. That's what kids did back then. You would be hard pressed to find that same scene today.
Bottled water has been around longer than some may realize. The once perceived medicinal value of spring water has given way to the convenience of taking water anywhere. The price that we pay for this convenience are the billions of plastic bottles that end up in landfills, lakes, oceans and literally anywhere that mankind can venture.
Bottled water will not go away and I'm not saying that it should. There are some alternatives however that can help reduce some of the waste that is increasingly threatening our planet.
Safe Drinking Water Doesn't Have To Come In A Bottle
There are different ways to filter and/or process water in the home. Some can be as simple as the Brita water pitchers or there are the more elaborate Reverse Osmosis (RO) drinking water systems. Water treatment is a science and I'm not going to pretend to know everything about all of the different systems that are available on today's market. Here are just a few examples:
1. Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems:
North Star RO System
This system can be placed underneath the kitchen sink, but I prefer to have these located in a basement or other area with the tubing running to the kitchen sink and refrigerator. The water is almost as pure as distilled water. One drawback is that the minerals along with everything else are stripped from the water in the process.
2. Drinking Water Filter
Insinkerator Water Filter
This is a taste and odor filter that will reduce, but not eliminate everything that is in the water. This particular filter is designed for hot water dispensers, but can be used for conventional cold drinking water.
3. Whole House Filters
Whole house filtering systems can be installed that enable you to drink the water from any fixture in the house. This is not to be confused with a water softener.
The History Of Bottled Water
Okay. Now That I Have A Water Filter, What Am I Supposed To Carry My Water In?
Excellent question. My family has been recycling bottled water containers for years, but apparently the Food and Drug Administration and others don't think that this is such a good idea. There is a chemical in the plastic called Bisphenol A (BPA) which can cause acute hair loss in middle aged plumbers. Well, these findings must be true since I fit that profile! Seriously though, there can be health concerns for those that experience long term exposure to BPA.
Wal-Mart, Target and others carry plastic drinking water containers that are "BPA Free" and are safe to use. The link below will connect you to a Google search page for these products.

Heffner and Associates In The News
I was named 2009 Contractor of the Year for the Greater Indianapolis Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractor's Association (GIPHCC) in the beginning of June. Mark Helms, who is the president of the GIPHCC, is shown handing me the plaque at the Mechanical Skills Apprenticeship graduation dinner on June 6th.
Additionally, the Indianapolis Star had a small article about the Child Friendly Bathroom that I developed several years ago.

Retiring Old Glory
Independence Day is just a few short days away. Some people have flags that need to be retired, but don't know what to do with them. Veterans groups such as the American Legion, Marine Corps League or VFW can dispose of old flags properly. Boy and Girl Scout troops are also another option. Please don't just throw your old flags out.
Best wishes for a happy and safe 4th of July!
