A Flood Prevention Specialist is not a new job classification dreamed up by an insurance industry executive in some remote glass tower. And it is not a new engineering degree from Purdue.

To me, a plumber with 18 years of experience turning wrenches, a Flood Prevention Specialist is a licensed plumber that can tell you about everything in your house that can cause it to flood from both inside and out. More importantly, this individual should be able to provide you with the systems, material or equipment necessary to minimize the potential risk of flood/water damage.

For those of you watching WTHR on March 27th at 6:45 am, you may have seen me with Tim "Treeboy" Bush and Steve Ambro talking about the WaterCop. Well, they were talking, I was just turning the water on and off to trigger the WaterCop alarm.

The WaterCop is a flood prevention device that will shut the water off to the whole house when one of the sensors detects water or the temperature in the pipes gets below 38 degrees.

Click on the link for more information or schedule an appointment with me and you can come to the house and see the WaterCop in action.

Sump Pumps, Tis The Season...

If you are receiving this newsletter and you have a basement, then there is a very strong possibility that you already have a battery back-up sump pump system. I have installed over 40 of the Pro Series systems in the last 8 years. So to those of you who can say that I'm preaching to the choir, please tell your friends, neighbors and loved ones that don't have a battery back-up system.

FYI- Sump pumps have an average life of 3-5 years.

Other Sources Of Flooding In The Home

Consider the following when assessing the potential for flood/water damage:

  1. A water heater on the main or 2nd floor that does not have a drain pan.
  2. Rubber washing machine hoses.
  3. Incoming water pressure in excess of 80 PSI.
  4. Landscaping that mounds the grade toward a window well or crawlspace entrance.
  5. Gutter downspouts that dump right next to the house.
  6. No relief discharge on the sump pump discharge line.
  7. Drain pan for the washing machine.
