Heffner Plumbing

 May, 2010
I asked for suggestions in last month's newsletter about what you would like me to write about. I had 8 people reply to my request and the winner is Sergeant First Class James Frederick. Jim is currently stationed in Afghanistan with the United States Army, but receives my monthly e-mail newsletters. His suggestion was to talk about the problems of having hard water and what can be done to prevent the damage that gets done to fixtures and appliances. Thanks to Jim and all of the other people that took the time to send in their suggestions.

Water Softeners Aren't A Luxury, They're A Necessity!

Several years ago, I heard that Central Indiana ranked 4th in the nation for water quality in terms of overall hardness. After living here for almost 20 years, I would have to agree. I have seen a ton of fixtures, appliances and water heaters that have been damaged or destroyed by hard water over time. The one question that I get asked over and over again is "How do I make my water heater last longer and keep it from banging and popping the way that it does?" I always recommend having a water softener installed. "But soft water makes my hair go flat and I don't like the slick feeling that I get on my skin!" is another comment that I get from customers. I can't relate to hair going flat since I don't have any, but the problem there is that people are using the same amount of shampoo with soft water that they did when they had hard water. Many people don't realize that you can cut way back on the amount of soap, shampoo and detergent when using soft water. Hair going flat comes from using too much shampoo. The slick feeling on the skin is actually the natural oils of your skin coming through. With hard water, the pores of your skin get clogged.

Yes, a water softener is an investment that costs each month as you have to add salt. What it protects, conserves, softens and extends the life of however more than pays for that initial cost.

Tell Me More About These "Saltless" Water Softeners

I would be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every time someone asked me about the salt-less systems. For the record, water softeners soften water, the salt-less systems can only condition the water. There's a difference, but most people zero in on "no more bags of salt to buy and haul into the house." I have personally heard from one manufacturer's representative of a salt-less system that if you want clear glasses from your dishwasher and the slick feeling on your skin to NOT buy their product. That being the case, I will not install one of these salt-less systems.

Car Alarms As A Simple Safety Tip

The following information was sent by a friend/customer. Thanks for this Shelly.

The alarm on your car can be an effective deterrent to thieves during a home invasion, can be used in the case of a personal attack or can even be used in a medical emergency. When you push the button on the car remote to activate the alarm, the only way that it will shut off is by either you shutting it off or the battery in the car going dead. Carry your car keys in your hand while walking to your car in a parking lot or take them with you to bed a night and set them on the night stand where they are easily accessible. For people with health issues, just carrying the remote in your pocket could be a life saving measure.

Please share this safety tip with your family and friends and be sure to let us know of any "success stories."
