How to use pocket change to stop your toilet from rocking

Do you have a toilet that rocks? I see this on ceramic tile more than any other flooring surface. The rocking is caused by the fact that the tiles aren’t all level. This doesn’t work all of the time, but sometimes this can be fixed by popping the plastic caps (china caps), loosening the nuts and shimming the back of the toilet. I have used pennies, nickels, dimes and even quarters to do this. In an extreme case, I’ll resort to an actual plastic shim specifically designed for toilets. Be sure to tightened the nuts after shimming the toilet and reinstalling the china caps.

A toilet can also rock simply because the closet bolts have come loose OR you could have a broken toilet flange. A broken toilet flange means pulling the toilet to make any necessary repairs and it’s no longer a weekend warrior project, it’s time to call in the professionals.
